Many people today suffer from unhappiness with themselves, but God made you exactly how He wanted you to be, He loves you just the way you are, and the Bible can show you how to love yourself for how and who you are.

You are the way God made you

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

–Psalm 139:14

The Bible tells us in Genesis 1:27, that God created human beings in His own image. The words in the original Hebrew mean representative or likeness. God doesn’t have a physical body like we do. The true image of God is that of an eternal spirit.

Likewise, we are not this physical body. Like God, we are eternal spirits. In the next life, the eternal life, we will be made holy and perfect by God.

You are not your physical body

One of the main concerns which makes people suffer from self-imposed unhappiness has to do with their appearance. Too many people focus on their physical body. Many people go through life believing that their body represents who they are.

In 2019, in the United States alone, Americans spent some $6.5 billion on surgical cosmetic procedures, according to Statista.

Look at social media. A lot of people are hyper-focused on posting selfies as a way of reinforcing their self-esteem, whether they admit it or not. They use their bodies as a way of establishing their status or importance to the world.

The Bible reminds us not to focus on external appearance, but the internal things of spirit.

“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”

–1 Peter 3:3-4

Learning to love yourself

An old quote, often incorrectly attributed to Abraham Lincoln, says: “God must love the common people; he made so many of them.”

It makes the very important point that we are all important. We don’t have to be good-looking, smart, wealthy or anything else to be important to God. We only have to be the way He made us. Just the way we are. The way God wanted us to be.

God loves you

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

– 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Being that you were created with an eternal spiritual soul in the image of holy God, as such, your body is a holy temple which holds that spirit. Jesus gave his blood to pay the price under the Law for the sins of humankind. Humankind was essentially “bailed out” through the blood of Christ so that who seek God may granted redemption.

As such, if you are in Christ, you belong to Him. You are an example of his glory and you share in that glory. You are worthy of love and He loves you!
