Light it Up! Don’t Be a ‘Hide-and-Seek’ Christian

“For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” – Philippians 2:13

A Game of Hide-and-Seek

Hide-and-seek is one of the most beloved games played by children—and adults. The rules are simple and the objective is easy—a bunch of people hide while one person seeks. The first person found is the seeker for the next round, and the last one found is the winner. Being the seeker is your “price to pay” for being the first one discovered.

But what if hide-and-seek was more than a game? What if it was a way of life? Your goal would be to hide in the shadows or blend in with the “background.” You wouldn’t want to bring any attention to yourself and you certainly wouldn’t want to be found.

Here’s the big question: As Christians, why do we live this way at times? We’ve been given new life via the Gospel, yet we do nothing with it. We just hide, never to be exposed to what we know or what we live for. It really doesn’t make much sense.

The Meaning of the Text

Today’s Bible quote is from Paul’s letter to the Christians at Philippi. He is sharing with the church the good news that God does all things through us for “His pleasure and His good even when we don’t realize it. We are His vessels and he has rescued us from sin so that we may rescue others.

Paul is encouraging us to not look like the world. “Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent.” Don’t blend in with the world. In fact, do the opposite. Stand out. Be an example of what a renewed life found in Christ looks like. We live in “the midst of a crooked and twisted generation” and are called to live “in the world, but not of it” so that we can “shine as lights in the world.”

How to Apply the Text

In a game of hide-and-seek, you most certainly don’t want to carry a flashlight or candle with you as you search for a place to hide. But in life, that’s exactly what we are called to do. Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

As your week begins, reflect on another childhood memory. Remember this song:

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine”

Light it up! Come out from your hiding spot, and seek for those that need to be saved!
