Daniel’s Seventy Week Prophecy of the Messiah

  • The Seventy Week Prophecy in the book of Daniel predicts the coming of the Son of God, the Messiah of the Jewish people.
  • Daniel’s prophecy contains six key events (Daniel 9:24) that foretell the coming of the Messiah. The prophecy commences at the command to rebuild the temple (Daniel 9:25).
  • The prophecy culminates with the prediction of the crucifixion of Jesus (Messiah) in Daniel 9:26. The Seventy Week prophecy of Daniel was fulfilled on the cross and through the church.

The prophet Daniel predicted the coming of the Messiah Jesus Christ in a prophecy that has been called “the 70 weeks prophecy.”

In this article, we will simplify this prediction to give you a short and easy to comprehend synopsis of one of the most amazing prophecies of the Bible which proves the truth of these Holy Scriptures!

Prophetic Bible code

First, it’s important to understand the different “prophetic codes” the Bible uses. In the prophecy of the 70 weeks, the Bible uses the code from the book of Ezekiel, which is laid found in this verse:

“And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year.” – Ezekiel 4:6 (KJV).

What this means is, when it says 40 days, it means 40 years. 1 day = 1 year.

The 70 weeks prophecy of Daniel

Daniel 9:24-27 lays out the length of the period in which the prophecy to come to pass, what will occur after that period of time, plus events to come at the end of days.

Verse 24: The events of the prophecy

In “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.” – Daniel 9:24 (KJV)

In Hebrew, the word translated as “weeks” is actually the word sevens. So the text actually says: “Seventy sevens have been decreed.” Therefore, what we get here is 70 weeks of years, which comes out to 490 years (70*7 = 490).

6 key events

There are six important things happening in this verse:

  1. “Finish the transgression”: This is the Jews rejection of God, and their rejection of Jesus as their Messiah.
  2. “Make an end of sin”: Jesus Christ would sacrifice his blood as the currency to pay the price for the sins of mankind. The end of sin will occur when the Jews accept Jesus as their Messiah.
  3. “Make reconciliation for iniquity”: This is the shedding of Jesus blood on the cross to end the sins of the world.
  4. “Bring in everlasting righteousness”: The return of Jesus Christ will bring in the age of everlasting righteousness and peace.
  5. “Seal up vision and prophecy”: This will be the fulfillment of all prophecy concerning the Messiah.
  6. “Anoint the most holy place”: Scholars debate on whether this refers to anointing Jesus Christ as the Messiah or the anointing of the final millennial Temple in the end times. Either way, both of these refer to Jesus final return.

The starting point of the prophecy

“Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.” – Daniel 9:25 (KJV)

Here we are told that there will be a command (or decree) to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. When this event happens, it kicks off the 70 weeks of years told of in the previous verse.

When was the command to rebuild Jerusalem issued?

Many scholars believe Artaxerxes king of Persia, issued the degree in 457 BC as found in Ezra 7:1-27.

The work of the Messiah begins: The baptism of Jesus

If we count 69 weeks of years, or 483 years. If we move 483 years forward from 457 BC, we arrive at the baptism of Jesus and 27 A.D. This is the true arrival of the Messiah, as his work begins.

The crucifixion of Jesus

“And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.” – Daniel 9:26 (KJV)

Next, we move forward in the final week, to the 70th week. In the midst of the week, or 3 1/2 years, (threescore and two weeks) we arrived at thirty-one A.D. and the crucifixion of Jesus.

This correctly prophesies Jesus death, for the Messiah was cut off, not for himself, but he sacrificed his life for mankind. The second half of this prophecy refers to the end times.

“And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” – Daniel 9:27 (KJV)

In the 70th week of this prophecy, “for one week” Jesus Christ did “confirm the covenant with many,” creating disciples who would go on to spread his gospel throughout the world through the present day.

The take away:

Daniel accurately predicted the time that the prophesied Messiah, Jesus Christ, would enter the world stage. It predicted his teaching to the Jews and the spreading of the gospel to the Gentiles after his death.

It predicted the death of Jesus Christ and the shedding of his blood as an atonement to sin.
