A new Gallup poll shows the continuing erosion of the church and organized religion in America, as confidence hits an all-time low. What does this mean for the future of America? The Bible provides some answers.
Religious institutions in America used to be among the most trusted organizations in the country. However, that is no longer the case, with the church and organized religion now among the least trusted.
When Gallup first started taking a religious poll in 1973, 65% of Americans said they had “a great deal/quite a lot of confidence” in the church or organized religion. It hit its peak in 1975 at 68%.
Confidence fell during the 1980s amid the televangelist scandals, dipping to 66% in 1985.
From that point forward it has had a continual decline, falling to a low of 52% in 1990. During the 1990s, confidence remained in the fiftieth percentile.
Religious confidence among Americans spiked back up to 60% in the year 2001. The increase may have been spurred after the World Trade Center attacks on September, 11.
But in the following two years, it fell to 45%, then inched its way back up into the low 50s.
Americans stating their level of confidence in “the church or organized religion” dropped into the 30s in the past two years and now has reached an all-time low of only 36%. Apostasy, the abandonment or renunciation of religion was predicted in the Holy Scriptures. We are seeing a great falling away happening before our very eyes, just as the word of God foretold.
“And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” – Matthew 24:10-13
The percentage numbers in this latest poll, as well as other recent polls, have shown us that the majority of people no longer claim to be religious believers. Instead, people no longer feel the need for God in their lives. Again, the Bible predicted the world would move in this direction…
“For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.” – Revelation 3:17
While America’s confidence in religious organizations has declined, the nation’s trust in other institutions has climbed. Americans put the highest confidence in the military at 73%, 68% on small businesses and 53% on police organizations.
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.” – 1 Timothy 4:1-3
On the flip side, only 38% of Americans have faith in the Supreme Court and only 24% in the criminal justice system. Organized religion is next at 36%.
Even fewer Americans have confidence in the medical system at 38%, with only 30% for banks and 29% for public schools. Among the lowest confidence ratings are newspapers at 23%, big business at 23%, television news at 18% and Congress at 11%.
“And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.” – Romans 1:28
The Bible tells us that God is not going to intervene and try to correct the wrong path that people are taking. God is going to allow people to use their own will and suffer the consequences for their actions.
America was once a godly nation. By all accounts, the United States has been one of the most blessed and prosperous nations on the face of the earth. However, the Bible has shown numerous examples of moments in history when Israel abandoned God and the nation suffered disastrous fates.
Could such a fate await the United States if she abandons God? If Israel is an example, then we know the answer.
