Grammy award-winning Christian music artist Chris Tomlin recently announced that his new Christmas song “Miracle of Love” was inspired by his own wife’s pregnancy.
During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE last Friday, Tomlin revealed that he and his wife are expecting their third child. According to doctors, the family’s own Christmas surprise is scheduled to be born 11 days before Christmas.
He tells the story of the day he and his wife, Lauren, discovered “the surprise of all surprises.”
“One morning last spring, Lauren took a home pregnancy test after experiencing some familiar symptoms, but still she thought ‘there’s no way,’ Tomlin recalled. “When she got the test result, she said she just started laughing. She’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, are you kidding me?'”
Later that evening, Tomlin’s wife gift-wrapped the pregnancy test and delivered it to him.
“I opened the present, and I was like, what is this?” Tomlin said. “I couldn’t compute it. It wasn’t going through my head. And then I almost passed out.”
As a way of celebrating the delightful news, Tomlin decided to write a new Christmas song to commemorate the new addition to his family.
“I started thinking about how I could write a lyric that talks about my baby being born at Christmas and then talks about ‘the baby,’ Jesus, being born at Christmas and that each line would match and would have a double meaning,” Tomlin told PEOPLE.
The lyrics of “Miracle of Love,” which released Friday on his new Christmas EP with the same name, parallel the birth of Jesus and his own holiday surprise.
“I got the news today / I heard that you were coming / It took my breath away / and the tears filled up my eyes / Surely you’d change some things / the way that I was living / I hit my knees to pray / so grateful for new life,” the lyrics read.
The 48-year-old singer said his wife “just started tearing up” after he shared the lyrics with her.
“I don’t think she’s ever done that before when I’ve just read lyrics to her. She just loved it. She was like, ‘Wow, what a beautiful picture of both things happening.’ It was real special,” Tomlin said.
The couple, who already have two daughters — 9-year-old Ashlyn and 6-year-old Madison — will be naming the new baby Ellie.
“It’s an incredible privilege to be a dad with these girls, and especially girls,” Tomlin commented. “I feel like there’s a special thing that a dad has with girls, and so I’m really grateful.”
