The Gospel Shows No Partiality

“For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.” – 1 Corinthians 12:13 (ESV)

The wonderful thing about the Gospel is that it’s available for all. It is non-exclusive. If you desire to place your faith in Christ and his sacrifice, you most certainly can. Your ethnicity, background, gender, or skin color will never prohibit you from kneeling at the foot of the cross.

Alternate translations

“For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body–whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free–and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.”(NIV)

“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”(KJV)

“For we also are baptized by The One Spirit into one body, whether Jews or Aramaeans or Servants or free men, and we are all made to drink The One Spirit.”(Aramaic Bible in plain English)

Meaning of the verse

One important thing to understand is the context of the times in which the apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthian church and the worldview of the peoples living at that time. In those times, the differences between peoples that Paul uses for an example “Jews, Gentiles, slave or free,” were both national and social differences.

Paul is making the point that through the Holy Spirit, all of those differences are completely obliterated. When we are baptized into the Holy Spirit and become one with Jesus Christ, we become one body in Christ, one holy brotherhood that makes us all equal members.

When we become one in Jesus Christ, there is no difference due to race, gender, or nationality. The constructs that divide us on Earth don’t exist when we become one in Christ.

The “drink of one Spirit,” is the blood of Jesus Christ. His blood is the spiritual currency that has paid the debt of our sin and has redeemed us. When we “drink in the spirit” of Jesus Christ, believe in Him, and that he died for us and rose from the dead, we are saved.
