“If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.” – John 12:26 (ESV)
The next time you visit a restaurant, pay close attention to how your server interacts with you. When you ask for a menu, what does he do? When your drink is almost empty, does he fill it up? If you need some extra napkins, what does he bring you? Whatever you request, your server follows through in obedience. This should be our response to Christ. Service invokes obedience.
“Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.”(NIV)
“If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.”(KJV)
“If a man serves me, he shall come after me, and where I am there shall also my servant be. Whoever ministers to me, The Father shall honor.”(Aramaic Bible in plain English)
Meaning of the verse
If we are to serve Christ, then we need to put our full faith in Jesus Christ, thus, to completely follow His teachings. In order to do that to the fullest extent, we must be Christ-like. This means our hearts, minds, and actions must be aligned with the gospel of Jesus Christ. If we do this, we are a true servant of Christ.
Following Christ is not an easy task. It is an undertaking of self-sacrifice. It’s putting others before yourself and being a servant to mankind. This is exactly what Jesus did in healing the sick, feeding the multitude, and suffering, then ultimately sacrificing his life to redeem mankind from sin. Following Christ is about not concerning one’s self with the pleasures of this life, but rather working towards building treasure in heaven, by helping the sick, the poor, and the oppressed.
We need to follow what Jesus defined as the law for his prophets:
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
– Matthew 7:12
We also need to take up the so-called “great commission,” where Jesus instructed us to:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
– Matthew 28:19-20
When we are completely in Christ – He is in us. When we honor Jesus Christ, the Son, God the Father will honor us.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.
Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
