“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2
Do you call yourself a Christian? Sooner or later you will have to prove it. You will have to step onto the “playing field” and get in the game for Christ.
But what does that mean?
It means not being a bystander. Not being an “armchair quarterback” – you know the type. An armchair quarterback is the person that sits at home watching a football game, while yelling at their TV screen and ranting about what plays the quarterback, (who is actually playing the game), should have made or what they should have done. The armchair quarterback is simply a talker, not a doer or participant.
We can’t be an armchair quarterback for Christ. We can’t stand on the sidelines. We need to get out there and take action – get on the field and actually play the game. To understand what’s really going on – we have to get involved.
In this analogy, the quarterback is the one whose feet are on the field and who knows the tempo of the game, and what the other team (his enemy and competition) is doing. The active quarterback is taking calls/plays from the coach (analogy to God), who objectively sees everything, and is the better judge of what is happening in the game.
These two are active participants who possess the best understanding – and their minds are in sync. This cannot be said for the armchair quarterback sitting comfortably on the sofa or easy chair (the analogy to the so-called Christian who doesn’t maintain a consistent mindset with God).
“and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” – Ephesians 4:24
What this football analogy means is: For your mind to be in the game, you have to be active in the game.
You can’t know God’s will if you aren’t in consistent contact with God. If you aren’t active in seeking and following God’s word, you aren’t going to be in the same mindset as God; therefore, you can’t obtain an accurate understanding of God’s will.
In other words, you aren’t on the same page as God. You’re not playing the game from the same playbook.
There are two things you need to do.
First: You have to read the Scriptures and live by them. God’s word has to be part of your thinking. It has to be so embedded in your brain that you react on instinct in a manner that follows Scripture. Your first reaction to anything needs to be a righteous one – not a sinful one. By following Scripture, you will know what’s important and what constitutes righteous behavior.
“but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” – Mark 4:19
Second: You have to put God first and live for Jesus Christ. You have to stand up for the teachings of Christ while rejecting the system of the world that is trying to pull you in the opposite direction. You have to proclaim Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” – 1 John 2:15
