When you commit to being a follower of Jesus Christ, you also become a leader, part of a holy priesthood, in which you are a minister of Christianity to others. Here’s how to fulfill that role wisely.
“You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
– 1 Peter 2:5
The Bible says that all Christians are holy priests as spirits dedicated to Jesus Christ. Every Christian, through the mediation of Jesus Christ, offers spiritual sacrifices that please God.
The analogy in the above verse portrays the kingdom of God as a “spiritual house.” In this temple, each Christian is like a brick, “living stones” that construct this divine palace.
We think of Jesus’ words:
“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”
– Matthew 16:18
Church also refers to Christ’s spiritual house.
In interpreting the last line of Peter above, through our faith and prayer, through the Holy Spirit, we please God.
“Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!”
–1 Chronicles 16:24
Being a holy priest or minister does not mean that you are equal or above those who study and dedicate their lives to leading the congregation. However, like those learned persons and teachers of Scripture, every Christian has both the responsibility and privilege of representing God to other people, as well as by serving them, according to Pastor Rick Warren.
It isn’t always degreed pastors, priests or ministers who are bringing people to Christ. Most often, it begins with individual Christians who introduce friends, family or acquaintances to Jesus. That is why Christ gave these commands to all of his followers:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”
– Matthew 28:19
“And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.”
– Mark 16:15
“And he said to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.'”
As ministers of Christ we have an awesome responsibility. We are representatives of Christ. We can either bring others to the Lord or drive them away. Many people have been turned away from the Lord because of poor representation by someone calling themselves a Christian.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
We should always strive to be the best example of Jesus Christ that we can, always looking to Scripture as our guide. It is important to pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance. Being in the right mindset can help us to avoid doing or saying the wrong thing.
